Business: Major Computer Manufacturer

Nature of Work or Scope and Results

This well established computer manufacturer had reached capacity in its manufacturing plants in California, Europe and Asia. The company's existing west coast manufacturing plant did not have the efficiency or productivity to compete against manufacturers of less expensive IBM com-patible "clone" computers. SCG was engaged to review the company's then current manufacturing operations and help them make a determination for a new, non-California, based site.

SCG reviewed the company's operations and an available manufacturing plant in Colorado which was formerly owned by Data General Corporation. This existing Colorado facility was deemed by SCG as being too small to support the planned production goals. The goals could only be met by completely revamping the company's manufacturing systems. SCG was engaged to develop the most optimum plant layout. Two layout alternatives were developed. New tote "lean" kitting type of assembly lines were recommended, along with combined Kanban and automated materials handling systems.

Recommendations were also made to modernize the materials storage functions, burn-in testing and other plant operations. The maximum production and storage capabilities of the plant were calculated by SCG.

A successful move of the company's operations into the revamped facility from was accomplished.
